Media Analysis Project

In this assignment you will choose a media item to critically examine. This assignment provides you the opportunity to both critically analyze a media item and develop a response or alternative version of this item that both incorporates your critiques and seeks an alternative.

Learning Objectives

  • To develop a nuanced understanding of the social, economic, and political constructions of gender roles and relations.
  • To critically engage with various forms of media and analyze the ways in which femininity and masculinity are portrayed.
  • To understanding the ways in which gender roles are assigned and intersect with other social categories.
  • To creatively develop an alternative through your critical analyses.

Assignment Requirements

  • Find a print or digital media item. The item must include an image or description of an image.
  • You are required to include/discuss an academic psychological study connected to your media analysis. 
  • Remember to include information/quotes from course materials, other pertinent texts, and to use proper APA citation. 
  • Using what you have learned in this course, critically analyze how gender roles, gender stereotypes, representations, and relations are presented.
  • Write a 2-page response to this media.
  • Prepare and present a 5-10 minute presentation of your response/feminist alternative.

Your paper must address the following:

  • Analysis of the conception of gender presented in media item.
  • Analysis of the effects of the media item on audience.
  • Discussion of how the media item helps to or can be updated to create positive social change.
