What am I doing with this paper?

Steve Lopez’s book The Soloist shares the story of one brilliant man who struggled with a mental illness and was living on the streets in Los Angeles. The book came out in 2008, and the film version came out in 2009; Both the book and the film heightened people’s awareness of the problem of homelessness and mental illness in America. We would hope that perhaps some positive strides have been made since then to combat this issue in society. You will be doing research to find out what positive measures have emerged since 2008.

Approaching your assignment

Welcome to the LibGuide for Ann Doersch's ENGWR 101 class.  This guide will help you with library research for your essay.   It will present information on searching books, databases and web sites that will help you define your topic and support your essay topic.

You will use the resources learned in the library orientation to find out what various cities have done to improve matters concerning those who are homeless and/or mentally ill.

How have some communities addressed these problems? Look at several articles, and then focus on two of them.

Write an essay in which you suggest ways that our society can help people who struggle with mental illness and homelessness.

Refer to The Soloist and use evidence from the articles as well as from your own experiences and observations to support your thesis.

You will need to carefully cite your sources in MLA format within your paper and include a Works Cited page at the end of your paper.
