Mark Dery’s landmark essay “Black to the Future” poses a critical question: “The notion of Afrofuturism gives rise to a troubling antinomy: Can a community whose past has been deliberately rubbed out, and whose energies have subsequently been consumed by the search for legible traces of its history, imagine possible futures?”
With the above quote in mind, how can Afrofuturism help us reimagine the past and understand the present in ways that can empower us for the future? What does Afrofuturism teach us about the things that need to change in ourselves and change in society in order for us to achieve an ideal future? Please discuss Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower and cite at least four additional sources to help you support your perspective.
