Your assignment is to write a research paper on the work of one photographer (5-7 pages of text, plus images and bibliography/works cited page) OR to create a portfolio of your own, original photographs inspired by the work of a photographer from history and accompanied by an artist’s statement of 3-5 pages.
If you choose the research paper option, your paper must have an argument (thesis) that you develop and support in your essay. You must use at least three scholarly sources beyond the textbooks and other readings from class. The success of your paper relies on the depth and reliability of your sources! You need to cite your sources within your paper (a good rule of thumb is to cite your source for any information that’s not factual or “common knowledge”).
If you choose the project option, you will need to create 5-10 photographs (digital or film) based on the style, technique, and/or subject matter of a photographer from history. Your artist’s statement should make clear your understanding of that photographer’s work, and explain how your work was inspired by historical examples. You must use at least three scholarly sources beyond the textbooks and other readings from class.
