The California State Library is the central reference and research library for state government and the Legislature. The California History Section holds a major collection of documents from and about California's history. Materials may be used on-site at the State Library. Checking out materials is limited to state employees, legislative staff and certain other groups.

The Sacramento County Public Law Library provides free public access to legal information.  The library is a practice library, focusing on practical materials for attorneys and the public.  Residents of Sacramento County may borrow from the Library by leaving a deposit with the Library.
